Siroto had a piece today about Rangel and how he is selling out to K-Street. There is no doubt about it his big D stands for Demopublican. It turns out Rangel is in secret meetings, always a dangerous thing, with the White House in which he plans to sell out the fair traders. Rangel’s so called deal is bound to hurt workers and Nancy bringing in the Clintonistas is not good news either.
When it is pointed out 06 was won on fair trade and labor issues, some Democrats counter that it was a host of issues that gave Dems their victory. Siroto links to a very interesting report by Public Citizen that challenges that election myth.
It tuns out that the 10 incubatants who voted fair trade 100% of the time won rather convincingly,
Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Ohio’s senator-elect – 12 point margin
Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) – 26 point margin
Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) – 24 point margin
Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.) – 77 point margin
Walter Jones (R-N.C.) – 38 point margin
Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) – 48 point margin
Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) – 60 point margin
Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.) – 32 point margin
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), now Vt.’s senator-elect – 33 point margin
Ted Strickland (D-Ohio), now Ohio’s governor-elect – 23 point margin
It also turns out the fair trader Dems did well against their anti-free trader incumbents,
House races where fair traders beat anti-fair trader incumbents: 19
Senate races where fair traders beat anti-fair trader incumbents: 6
House races where fair traders took open seats vacated by retiring anti-fair traders: 11
Senate races where fair traders took open seats vacated by retiring anti-fair traders: 1
So before Rangel turns over the Democratic Party to the Clintonistas, he should think long and hard about the 06 gains. It is very unlikely Democrats will experience similar gains in 08 if they turn their back on labor and fair traders now. The Dems can’t get a minimum wage bill though the Senate or pass the Employee Free Choice Act, but they are able to smooze with King George and make secret deals with K Street.
