You may not have caught this given the culmination of democratic primary chatter … former Republican Congressman (Ga.) Bob Barr is the Libertarian’s presidential horse in the race for the White House.
Barr is poised to siphon off enough votes from McCain to possibly tip “red” states “blue” and guarantee a landslide victory for Obama
I would caution the Obamacons of too much jubilee. A recent Rasmussen poll showed Barr taking votes equally from Democrats and Republicans and Nader mainly drawing from unaffiliated voters.
I think the Libertarian who commented on Barr’s electoral effect via the Washington Times site had it right.
The real danger in the Barr/Root campaign is not to the Republicans, but to the Democrats, and the reason is the “blue” Democrats — the Blue Dogs and the Blue Collars. Current polling shows 12% of Democrats cannot stomach Obama, and these are primarily the Blues. They likely will not switch to McCain either, but in what will be a contentious election, they won’t sit it out either. Come time for the debates, they will be open to the small-government pitch of the Libs. The 8% of Republicans who can’t stomach McCain may do the same. That’s a 4% spread, and enough to influence an election.
What is interesting to me is thousands of elections have been “spoiled” in the last 50 years for the Republicans but you don’t hear them crying about it like a spoiled little rich brats. I highly doubt that if Barr did “spoil’ the election to Obama’s advantage, we would hear the whining we have heard for the last 8 years.
I think it is great we have Cynthia McKinney, Ralph Nader, and Bob Barr running as third parties / independents this year. I hope more will join by the time this is done. It should be no more politically acceptable trying to disenfranchise a political candidate and their supporters than any other demographic of voters. We don’t talk about African American spoiling the primary for Clinton, or Hispanics spoiling it for Obama. Most of us would see such talk as political bigotry. It is, but no less so than Democratic fear tactics to limit voter choices.
